Description

Each year in the United States, approximately 21
million people are injured and around 25,000
killed in home accidents. The majority of these
injuries and deaths are product related. The
current estimate of the annual cost of consumer
product injuries is approximately 9.5 billion
dollars.
Congress recognized the urgent need for Federal
regulations to ensure safe consumer products
when it passed the Consumer Product Safety Act
in 1972. The Act called for the creation of a new,
independent Federal regulatory agency. The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission was
activated on May 14, 1973
